Is it time to talk about Schmuck 2018 already?

Schmuck 2018
united kingdom Of course it is! Not only we talk about Schmuck 2018 and its official section, but also of the collateral exhibitions and events, which are now part of this recurring date with contemporary jewelry happening every March in Munich (this year, from the 7th to the 13th).

The “Scale effect” brooch shown at the opening of the article is also from Francesco Pavan.

united kingdom We talk about it now, before February ends, so that we can finally book our train or flight and find a place to sleep at least for the weekend, when the winners from the Herbert Hofmann Preis are announced at about 5pm on the Saturday. This year, the only Italian artist in the official selection, the only one with a chance of winning, is our Graziano Visintin from Padua, who was selected in 2016 as well.

united kingdom Apart from the proper official selection from Schmuck 2018 – that will showcase as Klassiker 2018 Otto Künzli’s work – you shouldn’t miss the exhibition in the Handwerk Galerie, which will be dedicated to a “metal couple”: the Paduan master, the goldsmith Francesco Pavan, and Tore Svensson, the hermetical iron and steel creator. I can’t wait to see the effect of this combination of artists with such a different style language and personality.

united kingdom When I went to visit the Master Pavan in his studio in Padua a few months ago, the exhibition was already in the making, and I had the privilege of documenting some of the pieces, published here. The “scale effect” and the textile warp and weft effect in particular, hardly need any explanation.

united kingdom And what can we say about the relief structures (forged and not embossed). This work had its origin and inspiration from the incredible bas relief the artist saw in Vienna’s MAK. You will remember that the ”home” homage to Manfred Bischoff was also part of this series, which Pavan exhibited last year as well in the Handwerk Galerie, where also the “tower” you see in the pictures was.

united kingdom A word of mention for the exhibition at the Pinakothek der Moderne, which celebrates 50 years of Jablonec ’68. 1. International Silver Smithing Symposium, an historical event and moment where, for the first time, artists of contemporary jewelry from East and West Europe met for a summit in North Bohemia, in the then Czechoslovakia.

united kingdom They were four symposium weeks, during which those incredible artists (from Anton Cepka to Hermann Jünger, from Bruno Martinazzi to Helfried Kodré) made 70 exceptional pieces, experimental for the most part…all of which will be on display starting from March 9th. I’ll meet you there, for the opening of Schmuck 2018!
