Schmuck 2016 – Prosthesis and devices
Impianti, prolungamenti del corpo, inclusioni, protesi… dagli anni Settanta il gioiello contemporaneo è tutt’altro che estraneo a questo tipo di dialogo invasivo con il corpo. Non potevano mancare delle proposte di questo genere nella selezione ufficiale di Schmuck 2016 curata dall’artista Peter Skubic che, tanto per dirne una, nel 1975 si fece impiantare in un braccio un elemento di metallo Jewellery under the Skin.
Implants, body extensions, embedding, prosthesis… from the 70s onwards, contemporary jewelry has been relating to this kind of body-intrusive discussion. The proposals in the official Schmuck 2016 selection made no exception, and were curated by artist Peter Skubic – who had a metal element “Jewellery under the Skin” implanted in his arm in 1975 – just saying.

La statunitense Jennifer Crupi propone uno strumento collana, facilitatore di posa plastica per la mano di una ipotetica dama che deve restare ore a farsi ritrarre dal pittore. The American Jennifer Crupi exhibits a tool-necklace, which makes it easier for an hypothetical lady to pose for a portrait painter while keeping her hand perfectly still for hours.
Lauren Kalman
Lauren Kalman, sempre dagli Stati Uniti si propone invece di trovare un modo per riempire gli spazi inoccupati del nostro corpo con Device for filling a void. Lauren Kalman, also from the United States, tries to fill the empty spaces in our bodies through her “Device for filling a void”.
Gerd Rothmann
Impronte, calchi del naso o dell’orecchio li abbiamo ritrovati immancabilmente alla Galerie Handwerk nella mostra Affairs di Gerd Rothmann che, a partire dal 1976, ha sempre ricercato una immediatezza nell’espressività del gioiello attraverso una stretta connessione, quasi simbiotica, tra l’oggetto e chi lo porta. We found again, inevitably, fingerprints, molds of our nose or ears at Gerd Rothmann’s Affairs exhibition in Galerie Handwerk. The artist has been looking for spontaneous expressivity of jewels since 1976, through a deep connection, almost a symbiosis, between the object and the person wearing it.

Altro elemento che ormai si può considerare a tutti gli effetti come una protesi e alla quale il gioiello presta dunque molta attenzione è lo smartphone. Lo abbiamo visto con con i premi Hofmann (Moniek Schrijer) e Talente (Dovile Bernadisiute) ove questa tipica forma dichiarata o meno ha suscitato l’interesse della giuria. Another element that can now be considered a body prosthesis, consequently catching jewelers’ attention, is the smartphone. We noticed this at the Hofmann Award (to Moniek Schrijer) and the Talente Award (to Dovile Bernadisiute), where the phone’s typical shape, whether declared or not, had a certain appeal on the judges.
