Che sia Willy il Coyote o una costruzione di mattoncini Lego, il nuovo totem dei giorni nostri più che un animale guida “soprannaturale” è un portafortuna sentimentale, una proiezione intima dei nostri piccoli ricordi, dei nostri piccoli luoghi comuni, del nostro piccole essere cocciutamente attaccati a quello che eravamo o avremmo voluto essere da bambini.

Be it Willy Coyote or an object made of Lego blocks, the new totem of our time is not as much a “supernatural” guide animal, as it is a sentimental amulet, reflecting our little intimate memories, our little clichés, or our desire to be stubbornly devoted to the way we were or would have wanted to be as children.

Lo mostra Alexander Blank (che come avete visto ha vinto l’Hofmann preis 2012) con le sue teste scarnificate e decolorate dei personaggi della Warner bros (e non solo), in Totem on the Sideline, che sembrano finalmente aver finito di correre di qua e di là per il Gran Canyon e si sono lasciati allegramente ridurre a bianchi scheletri sotto il sole cocente. E lo mostra ancor di più con le teste di cane Anubi che a dire il vero mi ricordano anche il cane Bolt del film di Walt Disney di plexiglass a specchio in un riuscito incontro di gioco, riflesso e oltretomba!

Alexander Blank, the winner of the Hofmann Preis 2012 award, clearly conveys this with his skinned and discolored skulls from Warner Brothers. In the work Totem on the Sideline; the characters look as if they have stopped running around the Grand Canyon and have joyfully accepted being reduced to white skeletons lying in the scorching sun. This is even more evident in his Anubi-like heads that actually remind me of the dog named Bolt in a Walt Disney film. They are made of a mirrored plexiglass and successfully bring together elements of play, reflection and the underworld!

Una che di totem infantili dei tempi moderni se ne intende davvero è la neo zelandese (che vive comunque qui a Monaco) Lisa Walker che zitta zitta ha vinto due anni fa il premio ambitissimo Françoise van den Bosch. Giocare con i luoghi comuni di un bambino di 5 anni provoca in lei un grande piacere. Si chiama Glee, appunto la mostra presentata in questi giorni alla galleria Biró. Guardate qui sotto.

One of the real experts in childhood totem of modern times is Lisa Walker from New Zealand, though she now lives in Munich. She quietly won the very desirable Françoise van den Bosch Prize two years ago. Playing with the banalities of a 5 years old child makes her happy. The exhibit of her work at the Biró gallery is appropriately called Glee. See below.
