Otto Künzli is a concept not easily described in a few lines. He is an authority whose name has been associated with the Munich Academy for twenty years. Otto Künzli is at the center of all of the important events happening here and elsewhere in the world of contemporary jewelry. Kunzil is a concept in the sense that he is remains above, omnipresent, he transcends.
Otto Künzli was born in Zurich in 1947 and was a pupil of Hermann Jünger. His life’s work is on display at a temporary stand beginning today at Pinakothek der Moderne, before moving on to the museum. His first retrospective includes about 200 pieces and groups of objects spanning his career.
The exhibition in Munich closes on April 7, after which it will be moved to Lausanne in 2014 and to Tokyo in 2015.
Otto Künzli is the artist who used the red dot, the golden sphere hidden in the rubber bracelet, the one centimeter golden cube, the tapestry-like broaches, the scratched pendants, Mickey Mouse masks, and second hand wedding rings. The result is always minimalist, communicating only what has to be said and nothing more.
I am posting many photos here, each of which would need an explanation, or maybe not. Behind every object which seems to be “simply” what it is, there is always a reason, a why, a choice. A concept.
